Toiletries for a weekend or even a week can be pretty minimal, but 3 weeks to a month? I had to up my packing game if I was going to reduce weight and waste. Full-size bottles were not going to cut it.

First, let’s talk bags. I’ve had many toiletry bags over the years, and something I’ve come to value is the presence of pockets. If the bag is just one big compartment, things get jumbled around, or I end up bringing smaller bags to put in the large bag.

Simplify! You don’t need five tiny pouches to organize your toiletry bag — you need a better bag with built-in organization. No more rummaging around for the seemingly microscopic bottle of eye drops that’s *somewhere* in the pit of cosmetics you packed.

It’s also convenient to have a bag that you can hang on a hook or bar. No one wants to set their bag down on the floor of a public shower.

Travel Size Toiletry Bottles For 3 Weeks

I am partial to silicone travel-size toiletry bottles because they are easy to squeeze and, with the wide mouth opening, easier to fill than plastic bottles. The Humangear GoToob bottles are excellent. They’ve held up over years of travel, and they’ve never leaked.

GoToob bottles come in a few sizes. I have the 3.4 oz 3-pack bottles and the 1.7 oz 3-pack bottles. I find these to be ideal sizes for any kind of travel.

Space Saving Toiletries For Travel

Flatpak Bottles

Sometimes bulky bottles take up too much space, especially when packing travel toiletries for 3 weeks. The Matador Flatpak Toiletry Bottles are a lightweight, foldable solution.

I am guilty of lugging around my full-size toothpaste no matter the length of the trip. There’s some irrational fear in me that I’ll run out of toothpaste if I bring a small tube. Pill Organizer Container

Counting out pills and vitamins can be a chore, but it’s worth saving the space and leaving a bunch of mostly empty bottles at home. This little pill organizer is so handy and fits practically anywhere. Toss it in your purse, and you’ll barely know it’s there.

Period Care

Instead of overpacking more tampons than you’d ever use in a week, try a menstrual disc or cup. After switching to a Saalt Disc, I’ve never looked back. I don’t have to think about trying to pack enough disposable products, and it’s safe to wear for 12 hours instead of 8 hours with a tampon.

Solid Toiletries For Travel

My hair is thick and curly, so I unabashedly use lots of shampoo and conditioner. A travel-sized bottle of shampoo was not going to last me during a month-long trip. Not to mention the hassle of dealing with liquid shampoo and conditioner in multiple airports.

So, I started looking at solid shampoo, conditioner, and soap bars to pack instead. I was amazed at how well the bars work. The trick is getting enough product worked into your hair by rubbing the bar directly on your strands. Rinse as normal and enjoy soft, clean hair.

You can find a bundle of shampoo and conditioner bars from Kitsch. I’ve also heard good things about Ethique shampoo and conditioner bars. The bars last a very long time and are zero waste — no single-use plastic here!

Dr. Bronner’s soap bars can be used for hands and body. This super-concentrated soap is “pure magic” and supports your skin’s natural oils without stripping away moisture.

For storing all my bars, I have a Matador Flatpak Soap Case for each. This case keeps moisture out and allows your bar to dry fully between uses. Plus, it’s not nearly as bulky as a traditional plastic soap case.

Toiletries Women Forget to Pack

An item that often gets overlooked is towels. I bring a quick-dry towel for washing my face and another one for using in the shower. If you’re using a public shower at a campground, pool, hot spring, or hostel, it’s not guaranteed that there will be free and clean towels for you to use.

I swear by Nomadix towels. They pack down to practically nothing and are very absorbent. Get the Tiny Towel Pack of 3 and the larger Ultralight Towel for drying your body and hair. Even when towels are provided, sometimes it’s just nice to have your own.

If you’re looking for a more sustainable shaving razor, the Leaf Razor is incredible. I was sick of buying expensive cartridges that were good for a few decent shaves and then went dull. It felt like throwing money directly into the trash.

You can buy 200 Leaf blades for around $30. If you use three blades at a time, that’s the equivalent of 66 new razor heads. Comparatively, a four-pack of sensitive skin cartridges is $20. You’d have to spend $330 for the same number of fresh razor heads.

Yes, the Leaf handle is an initial investment, but you save exponentially on blades. The blades can also be recycled, so no plastic ends up in the landfill. Sounds like a win-win to me.
