West Auckland is one of the best places in New Zealand to explore on a budget. From black sand beaches and dramatic waterfalls to scenic coastal walks and lush rainforest, many of the region’s top attractions are completely free. After spending time exploring the area, these are the best free things to do in West Auckland that I think are actually worth your time.

2-Day West Auckland Itinerary
If you have 2 days in West Auckland, you can comfortably visit every destination on this list. I stayed in Piha, so this itinerary is based around that location. If you’re staying closer to Auckland’s city center, you may want to rearrange the order to reduce driving time.
Day 1:
Start your morning with the Omanawanui Track, one of the most scenic hikes in West Auckland. Continue on to the nearby Whatipū Caves, then enjoy a picnic lunch at the tables near the trailhead before heading back toward Piha.
Spend the afternoon relaxing at Piha Beach. Walk along the sand and enjoy the dramatic coastline before ending the day with sunset.
Day 2:
Get an early start at Kitekite Falls, one of the most beautiful waterfalls near Auckland. After your hike, drive into the city to explore the Auckland Botanic Gardens.
Next, head to Mission Bay. Grab a coffee and pastry from one of the cafés or bring your own picnic lunch to enjoy along the waterfront.
Finish the afternoon at the Auckland Art Gallery before driving back west to Karekare Beach for one last sunset over the Tasman Sea.

Particularly in urban settings, it can be difficult to find fun, free things to do — besides shopping (which, let’s face it, isn’t always “free”) and walking the city streets. West Auckland offers surprising cultural and outdoor activities that are easy on the budget.

Traditional Māori wear on display at the Auckland Art Gallery
Auckland Art Gallery
If you’re looking for some culture, the Auckland Art Gallery is the place to see. General admission is free for New Zealand residents, and admission costs are currently suspended for international visitors.
Check their website before you go if you’re an international traveller to ensure admission is still free.
Gallery exhibits change, but you can find paintings and displays about Māori culture throughout. I loved learning more about the Māori people and the history of Aotearoa.
It is truly fascinating to wander the halls of this gallery, and it’s one of the best free indoor things to do in Auckland.
Auckland Botanic Gardens

Did you know that Auckland has a free botanical garden? The gardens cover 64 hectares and feature over 10,000 unique plant species.
You’ll find everything from roses, palms, and native plants to African plants and a rock garden. It’s easy to spend a couple of hours walking the grounds and admiring the greenery.
Dogs are allowed on leash, and there is a dedicated off-leash area to let your furry friend run free. My favorite places in the garden were the palm walk and the African plants section. Gorgeous!
Certainly one of the best free tourist attractions in Auckland.
Coffee at Mission Bay Beach
Mission Bay Beach
Mission Bay Beach is an excellent place to sit back, relax, and take in the view of Rangitoto Island. Lay out a beach towel and watch ferries sail across the bay.
The water at Mission Bay is known to be calm and safe for swimming, although there is no lifeguard on duty. Swim at your own risk.
There are restaurants and coffee shops within walking distance of the beach. Perfect for grabbing an on-the-go snack when hunger strikes.

Free Things to Do in West Auckland — Near Piha
Piha and the Waitakere Regional Park feature 16,000 hectares of native rainforest, towering waterfalls, expansive coastlines, and black-sand beaches. We spent a couple of days exploring the natural beauty found in this area.
Lion’s Rock at Piha Beach

We spent hours walking Piha Beach. During low tide, we searched for shells and peered into tidal pools. Crabs hid in rock crevices and seagulls soared above.
During the summer, there is a lifeguard on duty if you want to swim and surf between the flags. The waves were pretty gnarly, and Piha Beach is known for dangerous waters.
We didn’t go swimming, but found enough entertainment just people-watching and exploring. Couldn’t ask for a better thing to do in West Auckland for free.
At sunset, Lion’s Rock lights up, and you can watch surfers catching waves. Powerful waves crash onto the rocks and spray high into the air. We stood mesmerized for quite a while.
Hike to Kitekite Falls

Just outside Piha is the Kitekite Falls Track. This hike is short and leads to yet another impressive waterfall with three tiers.
The track begins on a boardwalk through the forest and ends with many stairs leading up to the falls. You can choose to swim in the pool at the bottom of the falls, but a long-fin eel might join you!
You’ll notice a shoe cleaning station before you enter the track. Kauri trees are threatened by a soil-borne pathogen called Phytophthora agathidicida. To stop the spread of disease, it’s crucial that you wash your shoes of debris.
Did you know Kauri trees are some of the longest living tree species in the world? They can be 2,000 years old! Certainly worth a few seconds of our time to ensure they continue living.
Karekare Beach at Sunset
Karekare Beach and Karekare Falls
Just south of Piha Beach, Karekare Beach is a fantastic place if you’re looking to walk the coastline in solitude. We saw very few people there at sunset and felt like we had the place all to ourselves.
Karekare Beach is known for surfing, so if you brought your board, go catch some waves. Similar to Piha Beach, the waters can be perilous. Exercise caution if you plan on swimming.
From the same car park as Karekare Beach, walk up the road a little way to Karekare Falls — a picturesque waterfall with a small pool at the bottom. The walk is minimal effort for a big reward.
Free Things to Do in West Auckland — Waitakere Ranges Regional Park
No road goes through the center of the Waitakere Ranges Regional Park. So, in order to get to the southern region, you must drive towards Auckland and then down the coast.
The Omanawanui Track and Piha look close on a map, but it’s over an hour’s drive between the two. As you get closer to the Omanawanui Track, the road turns to gravel. It’s nothing crazy, but take your time on the blind turns.
Along the way to Omanawanui, we stopped at Huia Beach. There were public restrooms and a playground with a rope swing. It was a nice spot to stretch our legs after being in the car for a while.

Omanawanui Track
The Omanawanui Track delivers the best views on this list of free things to do in West Auckland. Overlooking the open ocean and the Big Bay, I couldn’t believe how blue the water was.
The view was well worth the slog up the stairs in the sun. It was pretty hot with very little shade. Wear sunscreen or cover up to avoid a sunburn.

You can choose to hike to the first viewpoint only, or go down and then up more stairs to the second viewpoint. We decided to go to the second viewpoint, but the perspective didn’t change much. I wouldn’t say going all the way to the second viewpoint is a “must-do.”
There is an excellent picnic area at the base of the Track with picnic tables, where we devoured sandwiches that we brought with us. Restrooms were also available.
You should have a headlamp for exploring the Whatipu Caves
Whatipu Caves
After we hiked the Omanawanui Track, we saw signs for the Whatipu Caves. We had some time, so we moseyed in that direction. The Whatipu Caves Track leaves from the same car park as the Omanawanui Track.
The Track was pretty flat, and you could see footpaths where people had wandered off the trail to the caves. I wasn’t expecting much, but these caves were much bigger and deeper than I thought they were going to be.
We went so far back in one of the caves that our phone flashlights weren’t enough to cut through the darkness. I wished I had brought my headlamp with me!
We followed the trail all the way until it dead-ended and then turned around to walk back to the car park. The caves were a delightful surprise, and I would highly recommend you poke around in them if you’re not claustrophobic or afraid of the dark.
